The septoplasty procedure, also known as a functional rhinoplasty, is performed to surgically correct a deviated septum. A deviated septum may occur if the nasal passage is off-center or crooked and can directly affect breathing habits. A deviated septum can be present since birth or caused because of traumatic injuries.
Generally, candidates for this procedure suffer from a deviated septum. This structural problem can cause trouble with breathingas well as nosebleeds. Snoring is a common trait in people who have a deviated septum and may also disrupt their sleep schedule. Patients who wish to deal with continued sinus infections may also qualify. Ultimately, candidacy will be determined through a consultation with Dr. Linville.
During the consultation, Dr. Linville will examine the nasal structure and discuss the patient’s symptoms and concerns to determine if the patient is a candidate for a septoplasty. Dr. Linville will then create a personalized procedure plan for the patient. He will spend time educating the patient on any pre andpost-operative instructions.
A septoplasty is a quick procedure that effectively provides dramatically improved nasal relief. Patients may experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. There is little to no visible bruising or swelling in this area after a septoplasty. It’s important to note that this procedure does not alter the shape of the patient’s nose. Upon completion, patients can enjoy a full night’s rest and fewer sinus infections. Patients may also experience more heightened senses.
Prior to beginning a septoplasty, patients will be prepped and placed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Linville will reposition or remove the bone and cartilage through small incisions in the nose. Once the nasal structure is straight, he will place splints and gauze to help heal the nasal passageway. This is performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients will require a ride home after surgery and it is recommended that patients do not drive until the next day. This procedure typically takes around one hour to complete. If patients want to address any aesthetic changes, they can couple this procedure with an aesthetic rhinoplasty.
It is recommended that patients elevate their head after surgery for the following 24 hours. Patients may experience slight swelling during the first few days of the septoplasty. Following the procedure, Dr. Linville will schedule a postoperative consultation to remove splints, monitor the patient’s recovery, and answer any questions. Patients can return to work about a week after the procedure and as directed by Dr. Linville. Improvements will be seen immediately and symptoms will continue to improve throughout the year.
