What Is a Facelift?

A successful facelift is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each person’s face ages differently. So we tailor each procedure to your unique needs. Using carefully placed incisions, we aim to accomplish several goals:

  • Restoring your faces volume
  • Removing excess or loose skin
  • Tightening your facial muscles

Dr. Linville’s specialized technique addresses a wide variety of scenarios depending on the needs of your face. With his method, he avoids the “artificial” look that less experienced surgeons may provide. The key to a natural facelift is to reposition the stronger layers beneath your skin in a more youthful position. Then we re-drape the skin over it. This allows for your face to look naturally tight without looking frozen.

Proper volume placement helps lift and define your cheeks, fill in the area under your eyes, and replace any temporal hollowing. Dr. Linville focuses on tightening and adding volume, which sets him apart from other surgeons. By doing so, Dr. Linville restores your natural and youthful volume.

Is a Facelift Right for Me?

Even if you took great care of your skin and health during your twenties and thirties, the effects of aging are inevitable. There are many reasons why you may want a facelift. If you are unhappy with the way your face has aged, this procedure may be right for you.

Below are some of the common reasons our patients contact us for the procedure.

  • Sagging: Due to natural aging or other life factors, skin begins to sag. This can add years to your face.
  • Loose Skin: If you have lost a lot of weight, you may have excess skin that hangs. Depending on your age and the condition of your skin, you may also have loose skin around your jawline.
  • Cheek Folds: Due to aging or things like smoking, deep cheek folds that start from the side of one’s nose down to the corner of the mouth can create an aged and tired look.
  • Self-Conscious: If you have lost your confidence in the appearance of your face, this procedure may be right for you. Having confidence and high self-esteem about your appearance is important at any age.

Mini Facelift Option

Much as the name implies, a mini facelift is a less intensive procedure than a full facelift. The mini facelift is generally characterized by focusing on a smaller area and moving less skin. Even though it is less invasive and requires smaller incisions, a mini facelift can effectively lift wrinkles and tighten the skin. It comes with the added benefit of a shorter recovery time.

Should I Get a Facelift or Mini Facelift?

Multiple factors go into determining which type of facelift is right for a patient. One of the significant aspects to consider is how much skin will be moved. A mini facelift focuses on the skin around the lower portion of the face. Being centered on a limited area means a less invasive procedure. However, for sagging or excess skin around the neck, a more traditional facelift may be best.

When there is less skin to adjust, a mini facelift can generate stunning results. Smaller incisions mean less potential scarring for patients. Any likely scars are easily hidden behind the ear. When considering either type of facelift, your physician will help you understand which is right for you. Neither is inherently better or worse.

During your consultation, Dr. Linville will work with you to determine which option will best meet your needs.

Non-Surgical Facelift Options

Many patients are not ready to commit to a full facelift surgery. But the good news is there is an alternative. The use of cosmetic fillers without an incision is known as a Liquid Facelift. Though non-invasive, it requires specialized training and an artistic eye to perform while minimizing complications. Dr. Linville is a master injector and well trained in the use of all types of fillers.

Just as volume replacement is critical to performing a significant facelift, good skin quality must be present to lift the face by fillers alone. If the skin is too lax, fillers may not be enough. If there is only mild or moderate skin excess, you may be a candidate for Facetite. This is a new non-surgical way to lift and tighten the face and neck area.

Revision Facelift

Dr. Linville also specialized in performing customized revision facelift procedures. This unique type of facelift is for patients who have already had a facelift procedure but are not satisfied with their results. We often have patients come to us from other plastic surgeons who are not satisfied with their results. Likewise, many patients may want to have an additional facelift years after their first one when results begin to fade.

In both cases, you may require a revision facelift to get results that leave you satisfied with your appearance. A revision facelift aims to provide the results that your first facelift failed to do. At the same time, it also carefully corrects any mistakes that your previous surgeon made. When performed correctly, you should be able to see the facial rejuvenation that you want.

GAIL SHEEHY

What Is Facelift Recovery Like?

After your surgery is complete, you may feel discomfort and experience swelling and bruising. This is entirely normal and will not last more than one week. Resting is the most important thing you can do to promote effective healing. Around the one week mark, you can get your stitches removed. You should be able to go about your day without pain medicine by one-week as well.

Most patients can get back to work after two weeks and resume their normal activities within one month. You will still have some swelling and won’t see your final results for six to eight weeks. But once you do, they will last for years to come.

Results

On average, your facelift procedure should last around a decade. A lift can take years off of your face and get you looking fresher and more youthful. To maintain the results of the lift, you can take the following precautions:

  • Use sunscreen when in direct sunlight
  • Take good care of your skin
  • Refrain from smoking
  • Try keeping your stress levels low
  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly
