Facial Rejuvenation

Rhinoplasty in Houston and The Woodlands

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects functional and aesthetic issues with the nose.  It is the quintessential plastic surgery procedure, and for good reason.  As the nose is the centerpiece of the facial profile, it receives the most attention, from both others and ourselves.  Correcting nasal deformities and restoring facial harmony and more importantly breathing can have a profound impact on your well-being.

Benefits of a rhinoplasty:

  • Improved breathing
  • Improved nasal contour and profile
  • Improved confidence and self-perception

Who is a candidate?

There are medical and aesthetic reasons to have a rhinoplasty procedure performed, and they often overlap.  Patients with a deviated septum or other obstructing airway issue, and patients seeking cosmetic improvement of a dorsal hump or correction of a bulbous tip can all be candidates for surgery.  Certainly with rhinoplasty, having reasonable, realistic expectations is paramount and a key factor in deciding whether or not you are a good candidate for this surgery.

What is special?

A rhinoplasty should be the most specialized, individualized procedure possible, and Dr. Linville’s attention to detail and artistic eye will leave you with a nose that matches both your facial profile and ethnicity.  No two noses should be alike, and this is especially true in Houston, where we have such a diversity of ethnic backgrounds.  Dr. Linville will strive to keep you looking like yourself, and with a nose that is in perfect harmony with your face.

New Techniques in Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty has certainly evolved especially over the last several decades, with refinements in technique and new approaches.  In some ways too, certain experimental techniques were done away with for more reliable and safe options.  Like most of plastic surgery, it is more about what one leaves behind than what is removed, and a perfect rhinoplasty is both noticeable and subtle – it should look as if it was the nose you were born with.  Some of Dr. Linville’s favorite rhinoplasty maneuvers include:

  • Percutaneous osteomies when possible to effect a subtle narrowing of the nasal bones, which allows for enhanced healing and less bruising
  • Tip refinement is done in most cases to narrow or define a bulbous or boxy tip, but these again are subtle changes
  • Spreader grafts – keep the airway open while simultaneously allowing for narrowing of the bony vault, help straighten the septum, and define the dorsal aesthetic lines.

Ethnic rhinoplasty

Just as every nose should be unique and fitting, all noses should not look alike or be too westernized or made to be overly feminine.  Maintaining a certain amount of nasal width, lower cartilage height, nasal projection, etc, while making a significant change is the most challenging and beautiful aspect to this surgery.  Dr. Linville appreciates the unique ethnic differences in nasal structure, and will be sure to maintain that uniqueness in your results.

The process

The first step is a consultation, where Dr. Linville will determine if you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.  He will go over goals of surgery, expectations, and make you feel comfortable with the procedure.  From that point on, Dr. Linville and his staff will work to make you comfortable before, during, and after your surgery.

Probably the most asked question or fear is, will there be a lot of pain.  Dr. Linville works diligently to help minimize pain and discomfort with the use of anesthetics and intraoperative long-acting medications.  Most patients do not experience sharp pain after surgery, but rather a slight discomfort and more so a feeling of being “stopped up”.  You can expect to wear a splint for the first seven days after surgery and to possibly have internal splints as well during that time.  After seven days, the splint will be removed.  Swelling is to be expected to be significantly resolved after two weeks, but final results are usually not completely evident until after a year.  This is probably the most unique characteristic of rhinoplasty surgery, and anticipating this as a patient is crucial to having a nice recovery.
